about

our mission

The mission of Jordan River is to introduce individuals to different streams of support that will aide in altering conditions for the better. We believe in involving our consumers in the development of the treatment plan and equipping them with tools needed to catapult change. It is through partnering with others and maintaining our drive to impact consumers’ lives that we’re able to do this. Jordan River Support Services works towards achieving its mission by utilizing case management, psycho-educational skills, outpatient therapy, consultations, information training, advocacy, research, community resources and education.

our leadership

JRSS was founded by a local resident with a heart for the community: Christopher Carter. I can say, from personal experience, that mentoring can affect positive change in our youth’s social, mental, emotional, and educational development. I have experienced these positive changes firsthand. As a product of a genuine and caring mentor, I know that mentoring services are not only helpful, but in some cases, necessary.

Growing up in Danville, Virginia, in a single-parent home, and lacking in positive male role-models, that need for additional support from childhood into young adulthood was a harsh reality for me. Having a mentor created an environment that allowed me to make positive choices and taught me how to follow the right path. As I became older, I quickly became aware of this need in my own community and began to implement change. I first began mentoring in my church and then in the local boys and girls club. I continued to invest in the lives of others while I pursed further education to assist in my endeavor to strengthen our community.

I first attained a Bachelor of Science degree with a primary focus on Psychology, and then pursued further training, receiving a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling. I have been providing professional counseling to youth ages 8-21 for more than 17 years. During this period, I have been able to gain experience in In-Home Therapies, Respite Care, Mental Health Support Services, Mentoring and Therapeutic Day Treatment. The change I witnessed within myself instilled in me a passion for our youth, and a desire to provide quality services and resources that can help today’s youth excel and become productive members of their communities. I feel that there is no such thing as ‘troubled youth’ just youth who have not had a consistent and positive role model in their lives with whom they can relate. I created Jordan River Support Services to be that catalyst that can unlock the limitless potential within our youth.
